Getting Started Guide - Part 3

This tutorial will show you how to quickly find the files you want on Usenet. It assumes that you have successfully completed Part 1 and Part 2 of this Getting Started Guide.

  1. Select a newsgroup, select a page of new headers and click Go (see Part 2 of this tutorial for more details). Then click Search.
    Open Search
  2. Type your search string in the search box (1) and click Search Now (2). The articles matching your search string are displayed in the list below (3).
    Open Search
  3. The search syntax should look familiar:
    • To find articles containing the words Hamlet and Shakespeare, enter Hamlet Shakespeare. Equivalent search strings include Hamlet and Shakespeare, and +Hamlet +Shakespeare.
    • To find articles containing .gif or .jpg, enter .gif or .jpg.
    • To find articles not containing the word spam, enter -spam.
    • To find the exact phrase vacation photo, enter "vacation photo" (including the quotes).
    • For even more powerful searches, use any combination of the above, for example: .gif or .jpg +index -"make money fast".
  4. To configure which columns are searched, click on Search Options... (1), and select the columns you wish to search (2).
    Open Search
  5. A faster way to find the files you want is to filter headers directly by subject. Close the search box (1), click on Options (2), select a page of new headers (3) and type .nfo or .nzb in the Filter box (4).
    Open Search
Note: The syntax for the filter box is the same as for the search box (see step 3 above).
Tip: This method works best for newsgroups containing posts that generally include a file with a well-known extension, such as .nfo or .nzb.
  6. Click on Filter Options... (1), ensure that Subject is selected (2), and click OK (3). Then click Go (4).
    Open Search
  7. Notice how much faster the filtered headers are loaded. To retrieve all headers related to the article TestPost (1), enter TestPost in the filter box (2) and click Go again (3).
    Find Related Articles
  8. The list of all headers related to the article TestPost is loaded almost instantly.
    Filter Results
