Getting Started Guide - Part 2
This tutorial will show you how to navigate newsgroups of any size. It assumes that you have successfully completed Part 1 of this Getting Started Guide.
- Let's first subscribe to a large newsgroup. Select the menu Newsgroup > Manage Subscriptions... and subscribe to the newsgroup alt.binaries.test (see Part 1 of this tutorial for more details). Note that it contains over 17 million articles (1). Click Close (2).
- Ensure that the newsgroup alt.binaries.test is selected (1) and
click Go (2).
- Once the headers are downloaded, note that the header download status bar shows that only 10,000 headers were downloaded, even though the newsgroup contains over 17 million headers.
- To download additional headers, click on the Options button next to the Go button.
- By default, headers in newsgroups are divided into pages of 10,000 headers. The page of 10,000 headers that was just downloaded is still selected, and is marked with a green "downloaded" icon.
Note: By default, when a newsgroup is selected, the most recent page of new headers is automatically selected. - To download additional headers, deselect the first page and select the second page.
Click Go again to start downloading the headers you just selected.
Tip: You may also select multiple pages. - To change the number of headers per page, select the menu Newsgroup > Edit Current. Select Override default page size (1) and enter 50,000 as the new page size (2). Click OK (3).
Tip 1: For newsgroups containing mostly single part articles (such as images), it is usually more convenient to keep the page size small so you don't need to scroll endlessly through thousands of articles. On the other hand, for newsgroups containing a lot of multipart articles, you may want to increase the page size to see more complete posts at once.Tip 2: You may also change the default page size for all newsgroups by selecting the menu item Tools > Settings... and modifying the field Default page size on the Headers tab. - Note how the first page has now been split into two parts: a block of 20,000 downloaded headers, and another block of 30,000 new headers.
- You may click on Refresh at any time to see the latest headers (1). You can see here that 3,271 new headers have arrived on the server since Binbot last checked (2).
